The term “governance” refers to a concept that is widely used in various fields related to public affairs.
Distinct from the concept of governing, governance incorporates the roles of other sectors and organizations beyond a government when tackling public problems.
In other words, while governance acknowledges the importance of governments, a government is considered to be only one of the actors that influence public policy.
As such, government needs to collaborate with other actors during the policy-making process.
This course aims to introduce the concept of governance, which in turn is expected to provide a theoretical perspective for students who study the urban development of cities.
Several issues related to governance, such as the goals of governance and governance mechanisms, are also discussed.

This is a required course for master’s students in the International Program of Urban Governance.
The goals of this course are to provide students with the essential knowledge needed to conduct scientific research, to review the advantages and disadvantages of different research methods, and to prepare students with the skills to develop a master thesis proposal in the field of urban governance, which is a partial requirement for graduation from the program.
To achieve these goals, the instructor will provide lectures and the students are expected to complete class assignments and actively participate during in-class discussions.
At the end of the semester, each student will apply the knowledge and skills learned from the course to develop their own research proposal.

This course is designed to teach students about the concepts and practice of quantitative data analysis.
It covers a broad range of topics from probability and distribution theory to multivariable regression analysis.

This course trains students to develop their own research agenda founded in a qualitative approach and using qualitative research methods.
As a preparation for their master thesis project students write a research proposal as the final assignment in this course.

Sustainability has become a crucial issue when developing land use plans for urban areas. The planning for land resources is expected to not only fulfill the needs of the current generation, but also not to deprive our next generation of the rights to fulfill their own needs. In order to achieve this, researchers or practitioners have to further understand the various components and their interactions in the urban environment.
At the same time, the concept of resilient cities, which focuses on the ability of cities to withstand and recover from impacts and shocks , either man-made or natural events, became a core issue in the planning processes in many cities. These two concepts have recently been combined in the literature to deal with the rapid changes in both climate and socio-economic conditions in cities around the world .
Therefore, one of the main objectives of this course is to enable students to develop a comprehensive and interdisciplinary mindset when facing the future challenges related to sustainable and resilient cities’ issues through both lectures, case studies and discussions.
Team reports relevant to topics of sustainable and resilient cities would also be conducted.

城市治理專題（一）
The aim of this course seeks to develop a comprehensive outline of diverse themes or cases of governing sustainable cities.
These themes and related topics include globalization, urbanization, climate change and environmental crisis, regional and urban planning, issue of housing provision, urban public finance, social and cultural governance.
Each lecture not only covers different topics theoretically but also provides certain critical cases, empirical studies or research experiences in relation to East Asian or Taiwanese context.
Through this thematic course, we seek to inspire students to rethink the contents or issues of different topics.
Besides, they can develop an initial understanding of possible supervisor’s research interests and angles.

The course Mandarin 1 is compulsory for students who enroll after the academic year 2020.
The purpose of this course is to develop students’ basic Chinese language skills that can be used in daily life in Taiwan.
The instructor will include speech, class activities, and practices to provide students with various ways of learning.

The course Mandarin 2 is compulsory for students who enroll after the academic year 2020.
This course aims to develop students’ language skills in Chinese, while at the same time, focusing on the central need of daily life.
Each week, we will have a topic to learn, discuss, and practice.
It also aims to equip students with the Chinese language skills needed to perform communicative skills in different contexts.
